Choosing cat litter can be more complicated than it seems. On shelves and in online stores, we can find tofu, bentonite, silica gel, scented, and unscented litters. Each promises "maximum absorbency" and "odor-free," but in practice, the differences can be huge. Which cat litter will work best and what should you really pay attention to?

Tofu litter – advantages and disadvantages

Tofu litter is a relatively new player that is quickly gaining popularity among cat owners. It is made from plant fibers, making it lightweight, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly. It absorbs moisture very well, clumps quickly, and does not fall apart when cleaning the litter box.

Another big plus is low dustiness, which will be appreciated by both sensitive cats and household members. Tofu litter is soft on paws and usually spreads less around the house than classic mineral litters. Many versions can also be disposed of in the toilet (in small portions), which significantly facilitates daily hygiene.

A disadvantage can be the price – tofu litter is sometimes more expensive than bentonite. In practice, however, its efficiency often compensates for the higher cost. Silica gel litter, also known as "crystal" litter, stands out for its very good odor absorption. The crystals absorb moisture, and the litter box appears dry for longer.

A downside is the lack of clumping – instead of scooping clumps, you have to regularly change the entire contents of the litter box. Some cats also dislike the hard, rough texture of the crystals.
